Sion (French pronunciation: [sjɔ̃]; German: Sitten pronounced [zɪtən]; Italian: Seduno; Latin Sedunum) is the capital of the Swiss canton of Valais and of the district of Sion. As of December 2016[update] it had a population of 33,999 ("Sédunois").[citation needed] On 17 January 1968 the former municipality of Bramois merged into the municipality of Sion.
